Seeking help for mental health or substance use issues can be one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Choosing to go through treatment and work towards long-term recovery is an important step towards the healthy, self-directed life you deserve. Knowing what level of care or what program to choose can be confusing. Understanding what kind of programs are available and considering which one best meets your needs can help you make the right choice for your unique situation.
Whether you need the highly structured environment of an inpatient addiction treatment program or the flexibility of an outpatient treatment option, understanding each level of care can help you make the right choice. For some people, finding a program that offers a combination of structure and flexibility is important. If you are interested in this kind of support, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) may be right for you.
If you or someone you love need supportive substance abuse treatment, please reach out to the Northern Illinois Recovery Center staff. We offer a range of residential, partial hospitalization, and outpatient programs to support your work in recovery. Call us at 855.786.1978 or fill out an online intake form here.
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
For people who need the structured, scheduled environment of an inpatient program and require the flexibility to return home in the evening, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a good treatment option. In a PHP, people receive treatment on most or all days during the week for several hours a day. They follow a predictable, structured routine during their hours in the program and then go home to sleep. A partial hospitalization program can be used as the next part of recovery for someone who has completed a residential treatment program. It can also be used to prevent someone from being admitted into an inpatient program.
What is a Typical Day at a PHP Like?
A typical day at a partial hospitalization program looks very similar to one at a residential treatment center. People follow a daily schedule of treatments and therapies, including:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Skill-building education
- Meeting with a psychiatrist, if needed
- Family therapy sessions
- Holistic therapies, like yoga or exercise groups
Each of the sessions or therapies is led by a qualified professional. A lunch break is included in the daily schedule, as well as some quiet time.
Is a PHP Right For Me?
A partial hospitalization program is a good choice for people who want a balance between structure and flexibility. It is a good option if you have a hard time functioning at school or work because of your mental illness or substance use. To be successful in a PHP, you must have enough support at home and are motivated to participate in your treatment. You must be medically stable and not currently experiencing the desire to harm yourself or others.
